Recommendations for Beginners from Zero
You may have various motivations, thanks to which you will decide to begin to learn piano playing:
• just to learn to sight read various music
• learn how to play music by ear
• learn to improvise and compose music
• learn to play jazz or pop-music

But in order to learn that, you need to take a preparation – master the skills of the competent playing and develop your internal ear. Because:
• In order to learn sight reading you need proper hand position and the correct sitting position, as playing even the simplest notes with incorrect movements will already bring discomfort and uneasiness. Arms and wrists will begin to get strained, back will get tired.
• In order to begin to learn to play by ear and compose music, you need to develop the internal ear and intonational singing
• In order to learn to play jazz or pop-music you need to pass 2 or 3 classical pieces. It will be hard for you to begin learning piano from zero on jazz pieces or arrangements of popular songs, because the simplest score in these pieces is always complex. And it is always very difficult to master the correct hand application and necessary basic musical means of expression on complex pieces.

Therefore, before learning sight reading, playing music by ear, improvising or playing jazz or pop music you should pass my courses and master all necessary knowledge of piano playing.

When choosing your teacher, try to clarify all about the training program:
• what will be the result of my training;
• what time will it take (3 months or 3 years);
• how much will the whole training cost (not just 1 lesson), in order to learn what your teacher offers you;
• as the guarantee of the results of training you need to see the results of the teacher’s work – his student results.

If the teacher cannot give clear answers on any of these questions – it means you cannot be sure of any guaranteed result with such training (no matter what your abilities are).
With such training you will lose a lot of time and money.

And the main thing, it's wise to ask you teacher to show his own abilities in the field that he is going to teach you:
• sight read a new piece;
• play a new tune by ear;
• improvise on your favorite tune;
• give a listen to his compositions;
• play some pop or jazz.

Remember that a teacher cannot teach something he cannot do. Therefore, a teacher has to be a practitioner, not a theorist.

Be responsible when choosing your teacher – as you have to know what you will spend your time, energy and money for.
